The Process of Making the Monroe Doctrine Essay - 855 Words

The Process of Making the Monroe Doctrine United States president Theodore Roosevelt announced the Roosevelt Corollary, an addendum to the 1823 Monroe Doctrine, in response to European nations that were trying to force Venezuela to repay its debts. Roosevelt threatened to send naval ships to Venezuela if those nations sought to forcibly collect the debt. Stability must be preserved, Roosevelt said in his 1904 annual message to Congress, even if it requires an â€Å"exercise of international police power.† The Roosevelt Corollary, based on the 1901 Platt Amendment, became the cornerstone of U.S. policy in Latin America. It held that the United States needed to be strong enough to mold affairs in other countries, and that the threat of force would back up diplomacy. This article reflects the conventions and biases of the era in which it was written. In the 1920s and the 1930s, the United States reduced the doctrines scope by favoring action in concert with the other American republics. The Platt Amendment, which was part of the U.S. treaty with Cuba in 1903 and which provided for U.S. involvement in the rule of Cuba, was revoked in 1934. This emphasis on acting with other nations, or Pan-Americanism, continued during and after World War II with the Act of Chapultepec (1945) and the Rio Pact (1947), which declared that an attack on one American nation was an attack on all. The formation of the Organization of American States in 1948 was designed to achieve the aims of the Monroe Doctrine through Pan-Americanism. Subsequently, however, fear of Communism in Latin America prompted the United States to return to unilateral actions against Guatemala (1954), Cuba (1961), and the Dominican Republic (1965), without consulting itsShow MoreRelatedCivil War : The United States Of The Western Hemisphere898 Words   |  4 PagesQuincy Adams (The Monroe Doctrine) John Quincy Adams was the sixth president of the United States of America. The Dream Of A Dream - 1645 Words

Slipping back into her dream, she was no longer in the church. Dream Fianna had just reached the market in the village square with her sisters and the cart. Scouring the marketplace for the shawl maker, the girls were approached by a middle-aged woman leading a bedraggled nag attached to a cart stacked with knitted goods. Laboriously, the lady plodded along, dragging her left leg. Dream Fianna smiled shyly at the woman. This wasn’t part of the lesson, Fianna told them. I never met this woman in the VRC. Dream Fianna turned. â€Å"You should have. You missed the witch thing. She moved in front of Fianna, her back to the other girls, blocking Fianna’s view of the market square. For a few seconds, Mistress Tooley’s face morphed into that of a scraggy ancient hag with long gray hair. She looked nothing like a pudgy-faced woman. Apologetically Dream Fianna tried to ease the tension. â€Å"Maybe there are others who knit the same pattern.† â€Å"It is a sad day when a child takes not the word of an elder. You should be asking forgiveness of the good Father in confession for your rudeness. As you are strangers here, I see that I must tell you the truth. I am the shawl maker’s mam. Unfortunately, she took ill this very morn so I find myself at the market today. After all, the rents must be paid and we need food for the table.† Ashamed that she had the bad manners to challenge an adult, Dream Fianna found the perfect spot to focus her downcast eyes, the toes of her shoes. â€Å"I’m sorry if I was rude, Mistress Tooley, it’s just that I’m in such a hurry to find

Desert Hikers Free Essays

According to John Muir, â€Å"In every walk with nature, one receives far more than he seeks. † Desert hikers explore a desert for things such as different species of animals, a new environment or even a vacation. Not only for the enjoyment, but some may go out for business references. We will write a custom essay sample on Desert Hikers or any similar topic only for you Order Now Regardless of, they must fully prepare themselves in order to survive in a desert. Inexperienced desert hikers do not fully prepare. Because some desert hikers are inexperienced, many dangers await them such as, the scorching heat, dangerous animals and getting lost. For instance, the scorching heat is probably the first danger desert hikers may face above all the others. Many inexperienced desert hikers know that it is blazing hot in the desert, but may not know the hours which to hike. To avoid much of the heat, hikers shouldn’t hike between the hours of noon and three. A heat stroke, caused by lack of water, is common to most hikers. Symptom’s associating with heat stokes are dizziness and headaches. To avoid this, drinking plenty of water is good for the body because of the constant sweating. If not taken into caution, these inexperienced hikers could experience nausea and vomiting from the heat, causing them to have heat exhaustion. These inexperienced desert hikers also may not know that drinking lightly salted fluids can avoid cramps, due to all the walking. These are just a few elements of dangers due to the scorching heat in a desert. Another reason inexperienced desert hikers face danger is because they may not know the actual harm desert animals could bring. For example, rattlesnakes and sidewinders, which are the most common in a desert. These snakes are extremely poisonous. Most of these snakes are camouflage to the grass and sand, especially the sidewinders. They bury their bodies into the sand and have only their eyes and nostrils above the sand. Stepping on them, causing them to strike without warning, could lead to serious damage. And even though scorpions are small, they are deadly. These are found in dark places such as wood and under rocks. Inexperienced desert hikers may not know that it is best to shake off clothing and boots before putting them on each time. Do You Have Any Sympathy At All free essay sample

For Both, One Or Neither Of The Macbeths? Essay, Research Paper In life everyone has ends that they hope to achieve and there are many ways that one can accomplish these ends. To accomplish what you desire you can either wait for clip to take its toll, or take affairs into your ain custodies and make what you have to make in order to carry through your desires. You can achieve your end every bit long as you have aspiration. In Shakespeare s Macbeth, Macbeth and Lady Macbeth had the end of Macbeth going male monarch: to obtain this they took affairs into custodies and killed Duncan. In order for person to perpetrate such a flagitious act as slaying the plotters must be ruthless, and this is what Macbeth and Lady Macbeth were, ruthless. This pitilessness provides small support, for any or some understanding for the characters at the terminal of the drama. Lady Macbeth is more pitiless than her hubby and her pitilessness is what fuelled the slaying of Duncan. Her pitilessness and power hungriness led aspiration is shown when she is first seen in the drama at Act 1 Scene 5 ; the missive reading scene. In this scene Lady Macbeth remarks on her ideas after holding read the missive from her hubby, she knows that her hubby who is excessively full O Thursday milk of human kindness ( excessively sort and Nice in other words ) may hold problem confronting up and holding the backbones to kill the male monarch. She knows that to carry through her aspiration, she will hold to carry Macbeth to kill the male monarch. Lady Macbeth uses different techniques to press Macbeth into believing that killing Duncan would be the lone to acquire on the throne, quotation mark, Your manus, your lingua ; look like th guiltless flower but be the snake under T Lady Macbeth means that misrepresentation will be needed to perpetrate the slaying. Possibly the most important events that display that Lady Macbeth is more pitiless than her hubby occurs in Act 1 Scene 7. Below is a quotation mark from Macbeth, First, as I am his kinsman and his topic, Strong both against his title ; so as his host, who should against his murdered shut door, non bear the knife myself. This shows that Macbeth does ( at this point ) have a scruples and he does care about being male monarch, but does non desire to hold to kill for the throne. In this monologue, Macbeth weighs up all the pros and cons of slaying Duncan and for a disconnected second, he decides non to kill him, but stating his married woman this, We will continue no farther in this concern she fools him into altering his determination. At this point I feel some understanding for Macbeth merely because he is so indecisive and can easy be persuaded by his morally stronger married woman. This brings up another facet, Macbeths and Lady Macbeths relationship. The relationship between Macbeth and Lady Macbeth is a really close one but a unusual one. There are several things that Macbeth does non cognize about Lady Macbeth that she knows about him, for illustration she knows his failings and the strength of his character. At the beginning of the drama Lady Macbeth is the stronger of the two. Although it was the enchantresss that told Macbeth anticipations of him going male monarch, It was Lady Macbeth who got the wheels turning, with her art of persuasion, and cognition of Macbeth s failings, to do him kill the male monarch. Another scene, which is of import about demoing the deeper characters, is Act 2 Scene 2. The slaying scene. In this scene it seems that Macbeth truly regrets slaying Duncan and inquiries his ain actions, quote Act 2 Scene 2 lines 50-53, I ll travel no more, I am afraid to believe what I have done expression on T once more I dare non. It is as if it is merely him that feels compunction and he feels disturbed by the fact that he has killed Duncan, quotation mark, Still it cried, Sleep no more! to all the house, Glamis hath murdered Sleep, and hence Cawdor shall kip no more, Macbeth shall kip no more Macbeth knows that his actions were non right and that he ll lose slumber over Duncan s slaying ( but we know who really does lose there slumber in the terminal ) nevertheless his married woman does non demo the same emotions alternatively she criticizes him, quotation mark, Who was it that therefore cried? Why, worthy Thane, you do straighten your baronial strength to believe brainsickly of things. At this point I feel compassion for Macbeth for he is in a state of affairs that he didn Ts truly want to be in the first topographic point but due to his married woman hungriness for power he was now standing with the blood of the male monarch on his custodies. I believe that Lady Macbeth, does candidly care for her hubby because she is ever salvaging him from uncovering that they are Duncan s liquidators, because after the slaying, Macduff finds Duncan dead, Macbeth so starts to move suspiciously and pull attending to himself. It is so that Lady Macbeth has to assist him out and pull the attending off from him and to her by fainting. She does this later excessively, during the banquet scene. Lady Macbeth is ever at that place to clean up after Macbeth ; Because of this I did experience a small compassion for Lady Macbeth at that point and wear t think so severely of her. A turning point in the drama has to be in Act 3 Scene 2. In Act 3 Scene 2, the farther impairment of Macbeth, and in peculiar, his relationship with Lady Macbeth is emphasised. Here, Lady Macbeth # 8217 ; s character is shown to be a alone adult female who one time knew everything that was traveling on in her life with Macbeth ; she played a portion in everything. She longs one time once more to hold the relationship that she had with her hubby, holding a strong influence on him. She wants to cognize what is traveling on. He does non specifically state her what is to be done but merely intimations that a # 8220 ; deed is to be done # 8221 ; . This scene clearly shows what has become of their relationship. It is on a diminution. They are no longer spouses as Macbeth one time said ; his # 8220 ; dearest spouse # 8221 ; . They have swapped places. She has lost the power that she one time had and Macbeth has gained a power that he neer had. After this scene Macbeth orders the slayin gs of Banquo and Fleance. After Macbeth orders the slayings of Banquo ( his friend ) and Fleance, I know begin to experience less compassion and understanding for him. This is because before Lady Macbeth was giving out the orders and Macbeth obeyed like a hapless Canis familiaris but now Macbeth utilizing his ain enterprise is directing out liquidators to make his dirty work. He is the 1 now giving out the orders. The scene, which I think, shows that Lady Macbeth cares for Macbeth is the Banquet scene. The banquet scene, apart from demoing the guilt that Macbeth carries with him after the slaying of Banquo, presents one time once more that Lady Macbeth is really watchful and knows how to pull attending off from Macbeth, who fears the shade of Banquo. She tells them to go forth and she has one time once more saved himself from uncovering himself, she has protected him once more and this presents us with the fact that she still loves him and attentions for him and wants to protect him. Something that Macbeth can non give to her in return. After the Banquet scene we do non see Lady Macbeth once more until Act 5 Scene1 The Scene that I lost all understanding for Macbeth is Act 4 Scene 2. In this Scene Macbeth sends slayings out to slay in wholly guiltless household of Macduff. I thought, that making this was wholly non called for and those actions took away any last scintilla of understanding I had for Macbeth. In Act 5 Scene 1, the somnambulating scene in which Lady Macbeth sleepwalks and reveals her guilt and panic of what she has done is a contrast to what her character was like before. It is now like that God had punished hear for her workss earlier in the drama. She was powerful and now she is so guilt ridden that she is at the province of somnambulating. It presents us with an sarcasm. In Act 2, where they have murdered Duncan she states that # 8220 ; a small spot of H2O shall unclutter us of this title # 8221 ; and yet during her somnambulating she says # 8220 ; out darn topographic point, out # 8221 ; and attempts so hard to take the blood. It proves the point that everything is non every bit easy as it seems. This adult female who was one time so powerful is now nil more than a frightened scoundrel and although Lady Macbeth knew this about Macbeth, he doesn # 8217 ; t seem to gain it about her. At this point even I have to acknowledge that I feel a small understanding for Lady Macbeth even after the evil workss she did commit earlier in the drama. Once mentally strong and powerful now she seems to be a down small adult female on the brink of self-destruction. The major scene in which the alterations in Macbeth and Lady Macbeth # 8217 ; s relationship is shown is in Act 5 where he is told of Lady Macbeth # 8217 ; s decease. This scene shows merely what the relationship has resulted to and the heartache that he feels. The quotation mark # 8220 ; she should hold died afterlife Tells us that Macbeth is sorrowing and that he has lost all that he has, it isn t truly a normal reaction compared to Macduff s, when he found out his married woman was dead. Macbeth s is instead mild relatively. His following address # 8220 ; tomorrow, tomorrow, and tomorrow # 8221 ; shows his fatigue and his realization that he has no hereafter and that he has lost everything he of all time had. He uses two metaphors about life. One of a # 8220 ; wavering taper # 8221 ; and the other # 8220 ; that life is merely a series of stages # 8221 ; He talks in a instead self-destructive mode as he knows that everything is lost. I think that at this point I felt sorry /sympathy for Macbeth after all that had happened to him. The Witches and his married woman being major influences on him, made his life, in the terminal, deteriorate and to the point of selflessness. Overall, holding read the drama my personal response is slightly ambivalent to state the least. In some parts of the drama you feel compassion for the character in others hatred for their actions. In the terminal, I say, I have to hold with the statement: This meatman and his fiend- like queen

Illegal immigration in United States free essay sample

In this text I am going to write about illegal immigration in United States. First I will talk about what illegal immigration is and give you some facts about it in U. S. I will also discuss for and against illegal immigration. I will give you some of mine point of view in the end. When you go to a country without permission and stay there for a long time, that? s illegal immigration. Many of these people search for visa and as an answer they get no, but still they stay in the country anyway. â€Å"Illegal immigration to the United States refers to the act of foreign nationals violating U. S. immigration policies and national laws by entering or remaining in the United States without proper permission from the United States government. †1 An illegal immigrant is an alien (non-citizen) who has entered the United States without government permission or stayed her to long so the visa has expired. We will write a custom essay sample on Illegal immigration in United States or any similar topic specifically for you Do Not WasteYour Time HIRE WRITER Only 13.90 / page 2 In 2009 62 % of illegal immigrants were from Mexico, 5 % from El Salvador, 4 % from Guatemala, 3 % from Honduras, 2 % from Philippines, 2 % from India, 2 % from Korea, 2 % from Ecuador, 1 % from Brazil, 1 % from China and 15 % from other countries. 3 Based on this we can see that almost everybody are from Mexico, one reason may be that there is a short distance between Mexico and the United States. If we look further into these numbers, then we can see that Europe it is not mention. Maybe people emigrate from countries with low economy and high unemployment? Illegal immigration happens all over the world. A good thing with immigrants is that they are necessary because they do jobs that most Americans don? t want. In U. S. there is several jobs with minimal wage. 4 If people from America don’t take jobs like that, then they need workers and it is good that immigrants can do the jobs. Immigrants do these kinds of jobs because they will start a new life and earn more money so they can support their families. They also may send some money to their family that live in the country they came from. A very good example of a job that many immigrants take is farmers. This is excellent for the farmers, they will be able to plant and harvest less expensively because they don? t pay so high salaries to immigrants. People who immigrate have one dream and that is to have a good life, earn money, and don’t worry about bills that need to be paid, because they have not enough money. This is the big dream for people who immigrate. 5 One reason that immigration is bad is that some of the immigrants don’t work, some of them doesn? t learn the language and some of them will not integrate themselves and their children if they have. Therefore the low wages to illegal immigrants’ will destroy all opportunities to Americans works will them pushing the wages down so that others don`t wants the jobs for so little reward. It will continue to growth of the demand for cheap labour and low wages. If the immigrants work †black†, they give nothing back to the society and that’s really important that everybody contribute, because it costs taxpayers billions of dollars. 6 If some illegal immigrants do something illegal it is difficult for the prosecution and the justice, when they flee the country. It can also be disparity between legal immigrants who follow the rules and those who dont. Another reason that immigrants are having a bad influence on United States is that they are overwhelming the system. For instance, all types of public services such as police resources and emergency room are diverted to dealing with issues related to illegal immigrants, while they do not pay federal or local taxes. 7 I think that every country needs some illegal immigrants. I think it is good and bad that we have illegal immigration. Illegal immigration can be valuable for companies who need people for just a short time and can do long work hours. They don’t have the same responsibility for them as they would have for an American worker. I also mean that if illegal immigrants do some criminal stuff, they should be sent to their country to serve the penalty. When illegal immigrants work, some of them make bank accounts and then bankers earn money on that. Then the society gets something back, although they are illegal immigrants. My opinion is also if some illegal immigrants are doing something criminal and then they escape the country. It is very bad for those who are affected, that they never get caught, him or her. Another thing that is not so good with illegal immigration is that some owners or farm owners buy people so they get as cheap labour as possible. So then we can conclude that illegal immigration can be good and bad. I think that we can never get to the bottom if it is good or bad with illegal immigration. However I think there are most bad aspects of illegal immigration.

Company Entry Modes Into New Markets

Question: Discuss about theCompany Entry Modes Into New Markets. Answer: Introduction A firm entering a new market is faced with many challenges from the onset of entry. These problems could affect the successful entry into the market and often derail the whole project. To counter this and ensure success, firms employ different entry modes to ensure their products actually get into the market. These entry modes are customized to tackle the different issues that the firms face and actively eliminate them. This paper seeks to explain the way in which these firms address the challenges they face when entering into foreign markets by applying the most suitable entry mode. There shall also be an illustration of some firms and how they applied the several entry modes to successfully get into markets. There are many different modes of entry that a company can apply to enter into a foreign market. These are essential matters and considerations when a firm wants to enter into a new market. Such markets require a firm to meet some requirements that may often beyond reach for the company during that period (Brouthers, Hennart, 2007). These modes of entry are often dependent on some factors that include tariff rates in the new market, the degree of adaptation for the product required, transportation costs and marketing costs. Firms will, therefore, choose the modes of entry that suit their businesses best and maximize profits. Communication Every firm that attempts to enter a foreign market will sometimes be faced with the communication challenge. Beside the common differences in language, there can also be a problem when trying to communicate some product to locals in the new market. For instance, some words that are ordinary and used often in English might mean something offensive in a different language (Bell, 1995). This can make the communication or marketing of a certain product or concept be misconstrued to mean something else, therefore, failing it miserably. This challenge can be handled by employing the franchising mode of entry. This involves selling the franchise rights to a company that is well established in that country to make products under the franchises' name. This will mean the original company doesnt have to necessarily handle the situation on the ground but gets a one off fee for the franchise rights and royalties as the business progresses. A good example is the MacDonalds multinational in several countries like china and the greater Asia. There is also Dominos pizza and Coffee republic that have made successful franchises all over the world. Culture In some instances, communication can also be hindered by the type of culture in that place. For instance, Americans often want to hurry things along and complete business as early as possible. This isnt the case in some countries as some cultures insist on building relationships first before handling business (Cui Jiang, 2009). This means that if a firm concentrates solely on making business and ignores the relationship part the business might not be successful. To counter this challenge, companies can employ the partnering mode of entry. This involves simple methods such as co-partnering with a company to handle the products. In that market to a strong alliance with a local company that will help in the manufacturing process while handling marketing and sales at the same time. Identification of a True Market Need A good business requires the investor to identify a true market need. The need makes the business viable and determines whether the business will make money or not. In order to achieve this firm that is entering a foreign market can opt to enter into a joint venture with another company that has already been in the market. Joint partnering as a mode of entry involves the coming together of two companies that are in the same business line to create third companies that can address the business at hand (Ahmed, et al., 2002). These two companies agree to share costs and profits from the company that they form before the business begins this will help the company intending to venture into the foreign market to enter successfully as the risks are split between the two firms and the company they tend to merge with already has experience in the market (Davis, et al., 2000). A good example is a joint venture between Sony and Ericson that created the Sony Ericson phone company. This went on t o become a very successful company that made both Sony and Erickson to be international household names around the world. Dilution of Brand Names Power. A firm with a relatively unknown brand will face a lot of challenges in entering a foreign market. With the current trends of internet and movies, there are some brand names that have made a name all over the world. To penetrate such a market would, therefore, require an entry mode that would bank on an already established company or a firm with a well-known product (Evans, et. al., 2000). This challenge can, therefore, be overcome by buying a company as the choice market entry strategy. Buying of a company is done by identifying a company that is well known in the country or locality that a firm has targeted to enter. The firm then buys off the company in terms of shares or as a whole (Erramilli Rao, 1993). This offers the incoming company the benefits of a well-established market and customer base and the advantages of being a local firm. A good example is when the Microsoft Company bought off the Nokia Company and slowly diluted it finally fading it off and taking up the customer base. Finding Reliable Partners To make a proper entry into a new market often requires having good partners. These partners have to be local entrepreneurs of firms that already know the market and can successfully assist the new entrant to get into the market. They can also provide vital information on the market dynamics and the geographical demarcations of the area of operation as well as legislation advice in their locality (Peng, et. al., 2008). They can also assist in hiring the locals to work in the company in order to promote it. It is, however, challenging to find such partners especially when new to the area. This challenge can be handled by employing turnkey projects as a mode of entry. Turnkey projects involve building a facility from the ground and then turning it over to the client when it is complete and ready to be used. This is often applied in in construction, engineering, and architectural services (Robinson, 1988). The client is often a government or a strong multinational. This often means that there is a minimal risk as the project is often funded by an international financial institution such as the World Bank. There is, therefore, minimal chance for there to be no payment. Toyotas car plant in Adapazari, turkey is a good example of a turnkey project Expenses The most common entry method of entry into a foreign market, however, is direct exporting. This involves the shipping of products directly to the clients in the new market through exporting (Ramaswamy, et al., 1993). Many companies around the world employ this method of entry by employing agents to represent them in the countries that they are to sell their products. These sales agents represent the interests of the company in the locality and are the face of the company (Root, 1994). This mode of entry cuts back on a lot of expenses that would be incurred when a company begins the whole process of building facilities and creating the market from scratch. To handle such issues like political unrest and uncertainties in markets, some companies choose to apply piggy banking as a mode of entry into foreign markets (Wright, et al., 2005). Piggy banking involves adding a firms products and services on the product portfolio of a company that is already established in the prospective market. It, therefore, means that a firms product will be marketed in the foreign market under the banner of the company that is already established there. This makes for very few risks and minimal costs for the firm as it is under the protection of the bigger one (Zahra, 2005). This makes the firm good profits as they have a market both in the locality where they operate in and abroad where the bigger company is handling their sales. There are some firms that opt to go into markets directly without applying any form of partnerships. This is the riskiest and most financially involving the mode of all and it is called. It basically entails getting directly into the market building everything from ground up. It usually takes up a lot of financial investment and the risk of failure is high. This is because the firm is not sure of the available government regulations, transportation costs, and availability of skilled labor or access to the necessary technology. Any firm that is entering into a new market must, therefore, consider the best entry mode that suits its needs and covers the areas of risk properly. The application of a proper mode of entry will ensure the successful entry of a firm into a foreign market and its progressive achievement of its goals.
